Whoop! This weekend is the first game of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie football season. I know I just posted the Old Army FightCast with Jordan Pugh, but here’s another one to get you pumped for game one. TAMU vs ASU – Arizona State University Sun Devils – September 5th at 6pm central time – AdvoCare Kickoff in Houston.
Oscar Hernandez is back with Trey Felder this week to talk about the upcoming game. They moderate the AggyArk board on SECRant.com as StrykerAg10 and TBirdSpur2010 respectively. Make sure to click on the Texas A&M sports board.
Are you excited?? I am!! Let’s see what this season’s team can do 🙂
-Coach Kevin Sumlin named Sophomore DE Myles Garrett as a captain.
-QB battle: Sophomore Kyle Allen vs True Freshman Kylar Murray.
-This year’s starting QB will be Kyle Allen, but I’m betting Kyler Murray will be right behind him since he’s the new recruit.
After Sumlin made his call putting Red Shirt Freshman Johnny Manziel as QB his firsts year coaching, we’ll trust him in just about anything. Allen did very well last season as a backup, thoguh mostly a passer, he can still move when needed. He’s already won on the road against Auburn last year.
Trey: Excited to see Allen play based on his field work last year. There’s a bit of a “changing of the guard” with Sumlin’s recruits finally making it to College Station and new Athletic Coordinator. The ASU QB Mike Bercovic has been looking forward to a game like this his whole life.
Oscar: Since WR Christian Kirk and QB Kyle Allen are both from Arizona, probably recruited by the Sun Devils as well, they’re going to be hearing a lot from this AZ team because they chose Texas A&M over ASU.
Trey: ASU head coach Todd Graham has been prepping his team for this game as if they’re going to Kyle Field because he wants his team to be ready for the fierceness (and high volume) of the legendary Aggie field. Sumlin expects Aggie fans will turn out in droves and turn NRG Stadium into another Kyle.
– Anyone who has ever seen an A&M game knows how loud the fans can get. Even when Trey and Oscar were on hand for a game in a domed arena, the sound had nowhere to go. I myself am a former student, class of 2011, and have attended many games from my childhood on and it’s one of the most amazing experiences of your life if you ever get a chance. Trey and Oscar are both proud members of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of 2010.
Oscar: Expects to see Aggies on the defense side – the teams apparent Achilles’ heel – Chavis (defensive coordinator/linebacker coach). The SEC’s defenses are at an NFL caliber. This year’s team will definitely need work on basic fundamentals and focusing when out on the field. They need a bit of improvement, but if our offense stays at an elite level, maybe our defense defense will catch up.
Trey: The TAMU offense is an elite top team. It’s the defense that’s currently the issue. We’ve had no problem scoring under Sumlin. They won’t be the Wrecking Crew, but it’s a start.
Ocar: Both sides really need the improvement. The offense has a good running game. Sadly, their talented running backs aren’t showing their full force, but with a new O-Line coach, they just might flourish. This year’s team has some great recruits, but not showing yet.
Trey: Definitely not using the talent to the top effect probably because of the Manziel era which was tough when your QB became your leading rusher. Put a dent in the running game. Previous underused RBs – Christine Michael. Tra Carson. Hopefully the team can now get better production and use out of them. Trey thinks ASU reminds him of TAMU and is curious to see how aggressive they’ll be with defensive pressure. Can see they’re going to test O&D lines of TAMU.
Oscar: This year’s receivers will have to go to work since Allen is more of a passer than Manziel was. They’re young and new, but will need to build their experience. With Aaron Moorehead as the new widereceiver coach, the group will need to work on staying on track and coming back when the QB is in trouble. Need more consistency. Hoping to see great things from Christian Kirk this season.
Trey: The team played too soft a game last season and will need to play a more aggressive game like in the Mike Evans days. Outside of general fall camp coach talk, Kirk is getting major praise as a True Freshman.
Oscar: Quick mention of Taylor Bertolet – and here is where Oscar let out a big sigh 😀 – He wants to have faith, but he’s a kicker. We’ve had some issues on him not being accurate.
Trey: Gonna be upset if he misses another 21yd chip shot. I swear. Not gonna be welcome back in Aggieland, haha.
Aggies in the NFL
Today’s mention is Randy Bullock who went to Klein HS in Klein, Texas and had 22:33 kicks 2011 senior season at TAMU. He went in the 5th round of the 2012 draft to the Houston Texans, the 101st pick and the first kicker ever drafted by the team. Currently holds the franchise record for most field goals in a game.
In his 2015 Preseason, Bullock has had 5 FG attempts, all made.
Most recent game: Texans 27 Saint 13.
Longest preseason kick: 49yds.
The Houston Texans will be playing the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday for the Governor’s Cup. Houston and Dallas have been consistent opponent with this being their 12th meeting and 6:5 record between the two with Dallas leading. Houston will be looking to even the score.
Katie (Trey’s very understanding wife) and Trey are gonna have an interesting night with this game, haha. Katie is from Houston and a Texas fan. Trey is all about them Cowboys.
What are your thoughts on NFL preseason games. Leave your comments below 🙂
Here’s what these two guys think:
Trey: Should preseason be lengthened, shortened or stay the way it is?
Oscar: Definitely don’t lengthen it. It’s a good opportunity for younger players to get experience and for the older players to show what they can do. Veteran players like Michael Vick, Tyrell Taylor, T-Bow trying to get back into the game.
Trey: I don’t hate it, but thinks it should be at least 3 game. So many players getting hurt in the preseason before the actual season has started. Around 20 have torn ACLs going into the regular season. This should be more about rookies getting their feet wet.
Oscar: I think we should have a game or so with the undrafted and rookies.
Trey: I think it’s a good idea especially since star players are going down so early.
Oscar mumbles: Ugh, Robert Griffins.
-As you can probably tell or for future reference, Trey is a Cowboys fan, and Oscar is a Giants fan. These two will play Sunday Sept 14th.
-Also, be on the lookout, Old Army FightCast will highlight one Aggie every week who has either had a great game or has a big game coming up.
How do you think our Aggies are going to do with the first game of the season. You can also leave those comments and predictions below.
Trey seems a bit confident that the Aggies’ offensive line are going to pick apart the Sun Devils, but the defense is still a bit weak.
Oscar, on the other hand, feels that the defense are going to over-commit and result in a lower score.
Beat the hell outta the ASU Sun Devils! Whoop!

Texas A&M’s “Wrecking Crew” was coined by defensive back Chet Brooks in the 1980s to describe the defense coached by R.C. Slocum and then Bob Davie. It remains in use today, although maybe not in the wide public vernacular as when the Aggies were one of the nation’s power teams.
