I’ve recently discovered the wonders of tumblr. I’ve decided to make my bucket list. Check it out:
Well, the older boys Casey and Ashley here with us. It’s their summer vacation. 3 weeks with us, 3 weeks with their dad. They don’t get along very well with Alex. Just like any teen boys with their step dad. I don’t seem to be able to get much work done though. The twins just love their older brothers. They seem to have forgotten all about me for now, lol. Doesn’t bother me much, but I feel a little left out, been doing more house work because of it. Casey and Ashley have also learned that I don’t take crap and I know more than they think I do. I have an older brother, I know the ways. I can anticipate what they’re going to do and stop it. The force is strong and on my side 😉 Also sooo much rain. Summer here is driving me nuts. It literally rained ALL day today.
Finally went to Wet’n’Wild. It’s just like Hurricane Harbor, but soooo much bigger and better. I don’t even care about others seeing me in my bathing suit because I KNOW that I will never see them again, ha ha. Got a cup as a souvenir and learned that, yes, you can get a brain freeze from frozen Coke if you drink half the large cup in less than 2 seconds, ha ha. I’m getting soo tan too. My hair has become a lighter, dustier brown color and I’ve been told by no less than 6 ppl that my eyes are in fact no longer dark brown, but are becoming hazel. That’s a little disconcerting actually
Should be going to the Australia Zoo and Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary this week. I can’t wait. To hug a koala is on a my resolutions this year and my bucket list 😀 I’m soo excited. The twins are going to love it I think. It’ll be their first visit. I have yet to see a real kangaroo or koala since I’ve been here. Koalas were my favorite animal when I was little. Now it’s a cross between them and giraffes, ha ha.
Well, Sarah and I won’t be able to go to Sydney for Australia day, but we are planning plenty of stuff to do around here. This is the Chinese Year of the Dragon. Around the 20th is the Chinese new year. I was born in 1988, that’s the year of the Earth Dragon. According to ChineseZodiac.com:
Earth Dragons – Years 1928 and 1988
More rooted in the ground, Earth Dragons make better decisions because they act more rationally. Earth Dragons are level-headed and able to control their behaviors. They’re more supportive of others, but they prefer being admired by others.
That makes a lot of sense actually, lol. Everyone seems to think that I’m a psychologist. I think I need to start charging, ha ha, like Peppermint Patty, only I’m going to charge more that 5 cents.
My sleeping hasn’t been so well. Actually hasn’t been that great since I originally got here in October. I have my good nights and my bad nights. Bad ones seem to be coming more often lately. My insomnia is coming back full force. Maybe it’ll help with my weight loss this time.. one can only dream, right? Started a new diet recently, called the Caveman diet. Pretty interesting actually. Fruits and nuts during the day, small portions, then a decent meal of meats and veggies only for dinner. Lots and lots of water. Did you know that drinking a full glass of water first thing in the morning will give you a ‘brain rush’ and wake you up faster than any amount of caffeine? Well, it really does work. Healthier too 🙂
Well, time to sign off now, it’s nearly dawn seeing as how it is now 4:45am and I’m seeing little bits of sun rays peeing thru the trees. I had better get at least a couple of hours sleep before work today. I’ll sleep late on Tuesday, my day off 🙂 Good night dear world 🙂
Living and traveling abroad is a tough thing when you’re away from your loved ones for so long. Had anyone else asked me to move home, I never would have even entertained the idea, but all it took was the right person. We’re gonna give this a real go at more than friends. I’m so excited. It’s all we think about. I’m looking for a job and an apt/house even though there’s still a few months to go. Sp come mid-May, I’ll be home in Texas. By the end of May, I’ll be on my way up to NY. My best girlfriend, Nicole, will be joining me as our last big girl’s road trip. A stop in Graceland is a must and anything fun we see along the way. Can’t wait! 🙂
“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.”
So last night was New Year’s Eve. I so wanted to go out and have fun for my only chance in Australia. Sadly I felt icky and didn’t make it past the Harry Potter Marathon we were having all day yesterday… and today. Spent all of yesterday literally doing nothing. Felt great. I’m off until the 3rd. I love the time off, but it leave me extremely bored. I’ve either cleaned the house or volunteered to watch the boys (for extra pay, of course, ha ha) because I’m so bored. I can’t even sleep past 7am any more. Darn sun. I’m actually hoping I can keep it up in the future.
Wow, this past year has had some amazing changes and some that I was sure would never happen. I spent a year in a mini mid-life crisis. Mini cuz I was only 21-22yrs old. I couldn’t afford college anymore so I moved home Sept 2010, but that was just the start of it all. I moved in with my best friend, her daughter (my god-daughter) and her older brother. I started dating her older brother. He was so sweet, but sadly, he was a rebound. I had a broken heart and wasn’t sure how to cure it. Sorry 😦 I spent 6 months living with them trying my damnedest (is that even a word?) to get a job as a flight attendant. Almost made it a few times, too. By April I’d had enough. I’d had enough of trying to be the perfect girlfriend, friend, daughter and potential employee for any regular job. All my friends were having kids, getting married and finishing college. I needed out!! Out of town, out of Texas, out of the country.
I eventually came across a website by sheer accident advertising au pair and nanny positions all over the world. On a whim, I signed up thinking “what the hell? if something happens, good. if not, it wasn’t meant to be.” Almost immediately I was offered jobs with 14 families in 6 countries. It was overwhelming. I’d finally settled on one family living in Hamburg, Germany. They sounded great, and so did their current au pair, an Aussie also named Sarah. So after agreeing on a set date and such, I started learning German and preparing for my big move. Mom threw me a party the week before and a few ppl came, not as many as had promised, but it was fun 🙂 I arrived in Germany Sept 19th after a 3 hour delay from Dallas and a 2 hour delay in London after 13hrs of flight. Sarah and I hit it off immediately… not so well with the family though. Mom was an actress and dad was a former soccer player turned news anchor. As much as I loved the kids, the parents were horrible to me. I worked 90+ hours a week for only 200 euros/ So not enough for the crap I went through. Sarah left after two weeks and I was left alone with the family. By the end of October, I’d decided it was time to leave. Even with Sarah being all the way back home in Australia, she helped me find a new family. That family just happened to be in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia 🙂 The next step was telling the family I was leaving and to get a plane ticket. Only I didn’t know how to wire myself money so I could get out. After a long skype call with my best friend in the whole world, he decided (no matter how much I tried to refuse) to send me money so I could book a next day ticket. When I told the family I was leaving, they treated me worse. I told them I was leaving in 2 days, but neglected to tell them the time. I was out of the house and on a train bound for Frankfurt before they would even wake up the next morning. But all the details of that adventure are in previous posts.
I thank Chris all the time for getting me out of that situation. I don’t know how I could ever repay him 🙂
I landed in Brisbane at 2am on Oct 29th to a hot, muggy night and a smiling host mom. Very different compared to my welcome to Germany. 25 hours of flight across the world and she was totally sympathetic. Alicia got me some Maccas (McDonald’s for us Westerners, ha ha) and let me skype home to tell mom I’d made it 🙂 Even let me have my own laptop to use while here. Within a week, I had already been into town, the beach in the city, the Gold Coast and been shopping with Sarah. Australia truly is amazing. It’s even better than the pictures. If I could, I would move here. I went on a few dates in the beginning, but no one quite seemed to match what my brain was looking for; no one clicked. So I just ended up with a few more friends that I needed. Sarah and I started planning our year here, since according to my visa I can be here for 12 months. We thought about working in New Zealand for a few months, moving to Toronto and even teach English in China. We hadn’t quite decided when she was offered a job working in Italy and Chris asked me to move to NY to be near him.
Now Sarah wants to join the Navy and Chris wants me to live with him. I still have 5 more months before anything official happens, but I think it really just took me getting out of the states to clear my head and to see what I really wanted in life. I can see more clearly what I want. I had originally planned to be out of the country for 2-3 years. I’ll have only been out for 9 months when I make my return to Texas. I’ll spend 2 weeks there and drive up to NY. I’m really looking forward to the new year. I can honestly say that I believe 2012 will be the beginning of something great. Even if the world does end, like the Mayans think, on Dec 21, 2012, at least I’ll have turned 24 and have lived in 4 countries and 4 states while have visited 8-10 countries and 27 states 🙂
My resolutions this year are:
to get in shape (no, not a round shape, but thinner and healthier)
learn to scuba dive/cuddle a koala (something to make my time here worth it)
do/witness something amazing
and finally: not let this year go to waste 🙂
How about you? How was your 2011 and how do you predict your 2012 to be?
